About Whereabouts & the data
Whereabouts turns the Census 2022 into a plain picture of what every Irish neighbourhood is actually like.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure is from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) Census 2022 Small Area Population Statistics, the most detailed public breakdown of the census. Ireland is divided into 18,919 “small areas”, each roughly 80 to 120 households, and for every one the CSO publishes anonymised counts of age, housing, education, work, commuting, language and more. We aggregate these to town and county level (population-weighted, so bigger areas count for more) and show each small area on the map.
How we present it
We show real percentages, always next to the national figure so you can see whether an area is unusually young, unusually owner-occupied, unusually car-dependent, and so on. The “character” label is a plain-English summary we generate from the numbers, not an official designation. National population is 5,149,139, median age 39, and 66% of homes are owner-occupied.
What Whereabouts is not
It is an information tool, not financial, property or relocation advice. Small-area figures describe a cluster of about 100 homes, never a specific household. When we mention mortgage brokers or estate agents, we can connect you with regulated professionals, but the choice is yours.
Who runs it
Whereabouts is an independent project of ABL Media Group, an Irish media and data business. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the CSO.
